Private Jets : Buy or Charter?

By: Jason Uvios

There are different ways you can charter a Private Jet. You can call up a Charter service and arrange a charter to the destination of your choice but for such one time charters you may have to schedule your flight at least a week or ten days early, and confirm the type of service you need during the flight, the type of food and beverage, etc. at least a couple of days in advance.

You can enroll as a member of a Charter Service, for a certain annual fee. With such a membership, you can fly anywhere with a twelve hour notice; the company will take care of everything since they already know your favorites as a member.

And then there is the Fractional Jet Ownership. You become part owner of a Private Jet. Say a Jet would cost $ 2.00 million; you get together with nine others and pool in $ 200,000 each to buy the plane. The ten of you will be flying the jet "at cost" and the maintenance expense and all other incidentals like Pilot's and attendant's salary etc. are equally shared. The only disadvantage is, you all need to sort out your flying schedules with each other to prevent any clash of programs.

There is a popular adage: When milk is cheap, why buy a cow? There are hundreds of companies offering private jets for charter, so one may assume there is no need to buy and own an aircraft. In some cases this assumption may be wrong. There are some reasons why one needs to own an aircraft.

Whichever way you charter a Private Jet, it is still someone else's property, and you are just a customer. At the last moment, due to some emergency, the flight may be called off though, in the interest of the Charter company this never happens. You still have to give them at least ten to twelve hours notice of your intention of taking a flight to somewhere. Certain class of people cannot deal with this.

For example, Tennis Champions and Motor Racing Aces and other top sportsmen and celebrities who need to keep traveling from place to place through the year would find it more convenient to own an aircraft, rather than chartering one.

This way, they can use their Private Jets like we use our cars. They can have an interior decor and seating arrangement of their choice, take off at short notice and enjoy such total freedom.
